In this website,-which refers to our new mission titled S/S Burdigala Project 25 May – 6 June 2009 – the reader will find not only enlightening historical facts about the shipwreck, but also about how important is her role as a perpetually evolving, healthy and vivid marine ecosystem.

Η σημερινή ημέρα άρχισε με δυνατό άνεμο που όσο περνούσε η ώρα όλο και δυνάμωνε. Ήδη γνωρίζαμε από το δελτίο καιρού ότι θα είχαμε άσχημες καιρικές συνθήκες για το σαββατοκύριακο και είχαμε προετοιμαστεί ψυχολογικά για το ότι κατά πάσα πιθανότητα δεν θα καταδυόμασταν. Το γεγονός επίσης ότι την Κυριακή η ομάδα του K.D.E. θα πάρει μέρος στον καθαρισμό βυθού της περιοχής Βουρκαρίου της Κέας, μας αφαιρούσε μια ακόμα ημέρα από τις προγραμματισμένες καταδύσεις μας.

Πράγματι γύρω στο μεσημέρι οι καιρικές συνθήκες ήταν τόσο άσχημες ώστε πήραμε την απόφαση να μην καταδυθούμε. Στην συνέχεια, αφ΄ ότου πληροφορηθήκαμε και το δελτίο καιρού της Δευτέρας το οποίο προέβλεπε ανέμους μέχρι και πέντε Beaufort, αποφασίσαμε να τελειώσουμε την αποστολή σήμερα. Οι λόγοι, πέρα από τις καιρικές συνθήκες, ήταν αφ΄ ενός ότι ορισμένα από τα μέλη της αποστολής έπρεπε να επιστρέψουν στην βάση τους, αφ΄ ετέρου η γνώση ότι μια επιπλέον κατάδυση, αυτή της Τρίτης, δεν θα κάλυπτε τα αναπάντητα ερωτήματα σε σχέση με την έρευνα του ναυαγίου. Έτσι αποφασίσαμε να κλείσουμε το πρώτο μέρος του K.D.E. σήμερα και να επανέλθουμε τον Μάιο του 2009 με μια καινούργια αποστολή η οποία θα φέρει τον προγραμματικό τίτλο, S/S Burdigala Project.

Σκοπός της αποστολής αυτής θα είναι η περαιτέρω έρευνα του ναυαγίου, η διείσδυση σε επιλεγμένα τμήματα του πλοίου, η έρευνα του βυθού γύρω από το ναυάγιο, καθώς και η προσπάθεια χαρτογράφησης του. Λαμβάνοντας υπ΄ όψιν το μέγεθος του πλοίου, γνωρίζουμε ότι ίσως και η καινούργια αποστολή να μην μπορέσει να τεκμηριώσει όλες τις πτυχές του αντικειμένου, υλικές και ιστορικές, πιστεύουμε όμως ότι η προσπάθεια αρκεί. Επίσης έχουμε σκοπό να ερευνήσουμε και να ταυτοποιήσουμε το άγνωστο αεροπλάνο που βρίσκεται κοντά στην πλώρη του ναυαγίου.

Είμαστε της γνώμης ότι όλα τα ναυάγια, ιδιαίτερα τα ιστορικά, ανήκουν σε όλους, και ότι ναυάγια σαν το S/S Burdigala, των οποίων το μέγεθος και ο όγκος τα καθιστούν ιδιαίτερα περίπλοκα, όσον αφορά την έρευνα από μια ομάδα δυτών, θα πρέπει να ερευνούνται από περισσότερες ομάδες οι οποίες συνεργάζονται αναμεταξύ τους. Σαν δείγμα καλής θέλησης και συνεργασίες παραθέτουμε το στίγμα του ναυαγίου για όσους θα ήθελαν να το καταδυθούν. Τους παρακαλούμε μόνο για δυο πράγματα, να το σεβαστούν και να μας πληροφορήσουν για τυχών νέα στοιχεία που υπάρχει ενδεχόμενο να προκύψουν από τις έρευνες τους.

Επίσης θα θέλαμε να προσθέσουμε ότι οι καταδύσεις στο S/S Burdigala είναι δύσκολες καθώς τα ρεύματα είναι πάρα πολύ δυνατά και το ναυάγιο βρίσκεται ακριβώς επάνω στην πορεία των πλοίων της γραμμής Λαυρίου – Κέας. Γνωρίζουμε εξ ιδίας πείρας πόσο επικίνδυνο μπορεί να είναι ένα πλοίο καθώς κατευθύνεται επάνω σου, την στιγμή που βρίσκονται δύτες στο νερό, ιδιαίτερα στην αποσυμπίεση.

The day began with a strong wind and as time passed it became gradually stronger. We already knew from the forecast that we would encounter bad weather for the weekend; therefore, we were psychologically prepared that probably we would not dive. The fact that on Sunday 28^th September the K.D.E. team will participate in the voluntary cleaning of the bottom of Vourkari’s picturesque inner harbor, we eliminated one more day of diving from our initial plans.

Indeed around noon the weather was so bad that we took the decision to call off any diving activity.  In addition, the forecast for Monday indicated winds up to five Beaufort, so we decided to conclude the K.D.E. task today. The reasons, besides the weather, was on the one hand that some of the members of the team had to return to base, while on the other hand, knowledge that a further dive, this coming Tuesday, would not cover the unanswered questions in relation to the investigation of the wreck. So we decided to close the first part of the K.D.E. today and schedule to return to Kea in May of 2009 with a new mission which may bear a title, “The S/S Burdigala Project”.

Right beneath this surface, the S/S Burdigala sleeps accompanied by rich aquatic life as she awaits for her story to emerge from the depths and be told to the world.

The purpose of the new mission will be to further investigate the huge wreck, the penetration in selected parts of the ship, the investigation of the seabed around the wreck and the mapping effort.  Taking into account the size of the ship, we know that perhaps the new mission may not be able to substantiate all aspects of the subject and its historical material, but we believe that enough effort will help. We will also investigate and identify the unknown aircraft near the bow of the wreck.

We believe that all the shipwrecks, especially historic ones, belong to everyone and that wrecks like the S / S Burdigala, whose size and volume make them particularly complex in terms of research by a team of divers, should be explored by several groups which cooperate among themselves. As a sign of good will and cooperation we publicize the position of the wreck for those who would like to dive it.  But we only ask them only for two things, to respect it and to inform us about any new evidence which is likely to result from their own investigations.

Also we would like to add that diving in the S/S Burdigala is difficult because the currents are very strong and the wreck is exactly on the path of the ferry line between the ports of Lavrion and Kea.  We know from our own experience how dangerous this can be, to have a ship aiming directly to the dive boat, when divers are located in the water, especially during decompression stages.

Εκτός αυτού κατά την διάρκεια της επιθεώρησης των ρεμέτζων μας, που κάναμε με ένα από τα  RIB της αποστολής, διαπιστώσαμε ότι και η εναλλακτική γραμμή κατάδυσης (alternative dive line) της πρύμνης είχε κοπεί και αυτή κατά την διάρκεια της νύχτας, ίσως από κάποιο διερχόμενο πλοίο, αν και είχε αναρτημένο φανό σήμανσης. Αυτό σημαίνει επιπλέον εργασία για την ομάδα μας, καθώς το κομμένο σχοινί πρέπει απαραιτήτως να αντικατασταθεί.

Το σημερινό διάλειμμα ήταν από την μια ανεπιθύμητο αλλά από την άλλη αναγκαίο για να ανακτήσουμε δυνάμεις, καθώς στην ομάδα μας άρχισε να γίνεται πλέον φανερή η κούραση. Εκμεταλλευόμενοι το διάλειμμα αυτό αποφασίσαμε να αξιολογήσουμε τα στοιχεία που συγκεντρώσαμε, να διαλέξουμε τα πιο σημαντικά από αυτά και σαν απόρροια του συνδυασμού αυτού να ανακοινώσουμε σήμερα στην ιστοσελίδα μας την ταυτότητα του ναυαγισμένου πλοίου που βρήκαμε στον βυθό της Κέας.

Αγαπητοί αναγνώστες, η ομάδα του K.D.E. είναι στην ευχάριστη θέση να σας ανακοινώσει ότι το «Άγνωστο Ναυάγιο της Κέας» είναι το με γαλλική σημαία επιταγμένο υπερωκεάνιο S/S Burdigala, πρώην S/S Kaiser Friedrich, κατασκευασμένο το 1897 από την εταιρεία F. Schichau GmbH στο Danzig της Πολωνίας, πόλη η οποία ανήκε τότε στο γερμανικό Ράϊχ. Το πλοίο αναφέρεται από γαλλικές πηγές ότι βυθίστηκε από τορπίλη στις 14 Νοεμβρίου 1916, μια εβδομάδα πριν την βύθιση του Βρεταννικού, μετά από μάχη που έδωσε με το γερμανικό υποβρύχιο U-73, κυβερνήτης του οποίου ήταν ο Kapitänleutnant Gustav Siess.

Το ίδιο πλοίο αφού αποκτήθηκε από τη γαλλική εταιρεία Sud Atlantique μετονομάστηκε σε S/S Burdigala. The same vessel under the new ownership by Compagnie Sud Atlantique was renamed S/S Burdigala.

Αν και διάφορες δευτερογενείς πηγές αναφέρουν σαν σημείο βύθισης το στενό που βρίσκεται ανάμεσα στην Τήνο και την Μύκονο, οι πρωτογενείς πηγές, όπως η επίσημη γαλλική κυβερνητική καταχώρηση της 15ης Οκτωβρίου του 1919, είναι σαφείς αναφέροντας ότι το S/S Burdigala, “torpillé le 14 novembre 1916 dans le canal de Zea, a culé après avoir canonné jusqu’à la dernière minute le périscope de l’ennemi. Son équipage a donné un bel exemple d’énergie et d’abnégation”.  Άλλες πηγές αναφέρουν σαν αιτία βύθισης την πρόσκρουση σε νάρκη από το ναρκοπέδιο που είχε τοποθετήσει στην ίδια περιοχή το γερμανικό υποβρύχιο U-73.  Στο ίδιο ναρκοπέδιο πιστεύεται ότι προσέκρουσε και ο Βρεταννικός.

Τα πλοία αυτής της κατηγορίας οι Γάλλοι ονομάζουν "Paquebot", δηλ. "Ποστάλια" ή RMS (Royal Mail Ship's) κατά του Άγγλους. Ships of this category were called by the French as "Paqeubot" or Royal Mail Ship by the British.

Τα στοιχεία που μας βοήθησαν στην ταυτοποίηση του ναυαγίου προέρχονται πρωτίστως από τις έρευνες πεδίου, που πραγματοποίησε η ομάδα μας κατά το διάστημα των τεσσάρων ημερών που καταδυθήκαμε στην Κέα, καθώς και από την ιστορική έρευνα που παράλληλα πραγματοποιήσαμε κατά την διάρκεια των ημερών που καταδυόμασταν. Με την πρώτη ευκαιρία θα αναφερθούμε διεξοδικά στα στοιχεία εκείνα που μας οδήγησαν στην ταυτοποίηση του ναυαγίου.

Το S/S Burdigala έχει επιταχθεί πλέον από το Γαλλικό Ναυτικό και μετατραπεί σε οπλισμένο μεταγωγικό στρατευμάτων του Α' Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου. Με αυτή τη μορφή βυθίστηκε στη Κέα! The S/S Burdigala has been commandeered by the French Navy and converted as an armed troop transporter during the 1st WW. In this dress she sank in the Kea Channel.

Αν και το ναυάγιο που ερευνήσαμε δεν ανήκει στην περίοδο του Β΄ παγκοσμίου πολέμου, όπως είχαμε αρχικά υποθέσει, αλλά του Α΄, είμαστε υπερήφανοι για το επίτευγμα της ταυτοποίησης, της καταγραφής, της τεκμηρίωσης και της έρευνας που πραγματοποιήσαμε στον χώρο που μέχρι πριν λίγες ημέρες βρισκόταν το «Άγνωστο Ναυάγιο της Κέας». Τον χώρο αυτόν καταλαμβάνει πλέον το S/S Burdigala, πρώην S/S Kaiser Friedrich, του οποίου η έρευνα πρόκειται να συνεχιστεί όχι μόνο στον βυθό της Κέας, αλλά και σε ιστορικά αρχεία, βιβλιοθήκες και μουσεία. Αυτή είναι η άλλη πλευρά του ναυαγιοκαδυτικού νομίσματος η οποία οδηγεί σε μια κατάδυση, εξ΄ ίσου σημαντική, στην ιστορία.

Today, sixth day of the K.D.E. started with a weak Westerly wind which then evolved into a possible NW (Mistral or Meltemi), which forced us to refrain from diving. Besides during the inspection of our mooring lines which we did by using one of the RIB’s of the mission, we found that the alternative dive line positioned at the stern section of the shipwreck was cut loose during the night, perhaps by a passing ship, despite the fact that a flashing marker was on the buoy. That means extra work for our team, as the cut rope must be replaced.

Todays diving break due to an unwanted factor was also necessary for retrieving the Team’s forces, as we all had started to become fatigued. Taking advantage of this break we decided to assess all the data we had gathered so far, to pick the most significant of these and as a result of this combination, to conclude on the identity issue and then announce today on our website the name of the shipwrecked vessel found at the bottom of the Kea waters.

Dear readers, the K.D.E. Team is pleased to announce that the «Unknown Shipwreck of Keas» is a French flag, commandeered at the time of sinking, ocean liner S/S Burdigala, former S/S Kaiser Friedrich, built in 1897 by the company F. Schichau GmbH of Danzig, Poland, a town which then belonged to the German Reich. The ship as reported by French sourcres, was sunk by a torpedo on 14^th November 1916, only a week before the sinking of the HMHS Britannic, ensuing a fierce sea battle against the German submarine U-73, under the command of Kapitänleutnant Gustav Siess.

Although various secondary sources indicate as the sinking position one which is between the islands of Tinos and Mykonos, the primary sources, such as the French government official registration of 15 October 1919, is very clear by stating that the S/S Burdigala “torpillé le 14 novembre 1916 dans le canal de Zea, a culé après avoir canonné jusqu’à la dernière minute le périscope de l’ennemi. Son équipage a donné un bel exemple d’énergie et d’abnégation“. Nevertheless, other sources report mining as the cause of sinking, from a mine laid in the same area by the German ocean minelayer submarine U-73. In fact the HMHS Britannic is believed to have hit another mine from this very same minefield, positioned less than 2 miles from the port of St. Nicholas in Kea.

The data which helped us to identify the wreck derived primarily from the field investigations, carried out by our Team during the four days of diving in Kea, as well as from a historical survey which was held in parallel during these same days. With a first opportunity, we will present in detail all the elements which led us to identify this shipwreck.

Although the wreck that we investigated does not belong to the period of Second World War, as we had initially assumed, but to the First, we are proud of the achievement of her identification, registration, documentation and research we have done so far and isn short time as until a few days ago it remained as the «Unknown Shipwreck of Kea». Now this spot in the bottom and in history is occupied by the ocean liner S/S Burdigala, former S/S Kaiser Friedrich, whose investigation will continue, not only in the bottom of the crystal clear Kea waters, but also in historical archives, libraries and museums. This is the other exciting side of the coin of shipwreck diving which leads to another dive, equally important, the one in history.

Το ρεύμα «ξύριζε» στην κυριολεξία, όχι μόνο κατά την διάρκεια της κατάδυσης και της ανάδυσης αλλά και για όσο διάστημα βρισκόμασταν στο ναυάγιο, με την μόνη διαφορά ότι εδώ βρίσκαμε κατάλληλους χώρους στην υπερκατασκευή για να προφυλαχτούμε από τη ροή του. Κατά την διάρκεια της κατάδυσης βρήκαμε τον τεράστιο αριστερό κόκκινο φανό πορείας του πλοίου καθώς και πολλές μεγάλες μπρούτζινες πλάκες με κρύσταλλα και τρύπες για βίδες γύρω από το πλαίσιο, οι οποίες, κατά την γνώμη μας, προέρχονται από την κατεστραμμένη οροφή του μπροστινού μέρους της υπερκατασκευής. Κινούμενοι στην συνέχεια προς το σημείο του ρήγματος που χωρίζει το πρυμναίο και το πρωραίο τμήμα, διαπιστώσαμε για μια ακόμα φορά το μεγάλο μέγεθος του πλοίου. Υπολογίζοντας τους χρόνους μας, κρίναμε ότι με την ένταση του ρεύματος και το μέγεθος του ναυαγίου θα ήταν πολύ δύσκολο να καλύψουμε την απόσταση, έτσι αποφασίσαμε να επιστρέψουμε στην περιοχή της πλώρης και να την ερευνήσουμε πιο συστηματικά. Εκεί ανακαλύψαμε ότι πέρα από τους κάλυκες του αντιαεροπορικού πυροβόλου υπήρχαν διεσπαρμένοι και άλλοι, ευμεγέθεις κάλυκες πυροβόλου μεγάλου διαμετρήματος, όπως τα κανόνια της πλώρης. Όλη η εικόνα, με την θέση και την φορά των πυροβόλων καθώς και τα σημεία που βρίσκονται τα υπόλοιπα ευρήματα, έδειχνε ότι υπήρξε έντονη μάχη υπεράσπισης πριν την βύθιση του πλοίου.  Η στιγμή αυτή παραμένει σιωπηλός μάρτυρας πολλών άγνωστων ακόμη πτυχών της ιστορίας αυτού του υπερωκεάνειου που βρήκε τον υγρό του τάφο μέσα στα πεντακάθαρα νερά του Αιγαίου.

Τα μαγιάτικα ήταν και πάλι εκεί να μας υποδεχθούν και να μας ακολουθήσουν με περιέργεια κατά την διάρκεια της βουτιάς. Καθώς όμως έχουν πλέον συνηθίσει την παρουσία μας, έδειχναν εμπιστοσύνη και έρχονταν δίπλα μας σε απόσταση επαφής. Όπως και στις προηγούμενες καταδύσεις μας συνόδευσαν και πάλι μέχρι τις πρώτες στάσεις αποσυμπίεσης, για να χαθούν στην συνέχεια στο απέραντο γαλάζιο.

Αύριο ελπίζουμε να καταδυθούμε επιτέλους στην πρύμνη του πλοίου για να διαπιστώσουμε για την ύπαρξη ή μη, τρίτου άξονα και προπέλας. Αυτό όμως μπορεί να γίνει μόνο αν μας το επιτρέψουν οι καιρικές συνθήκες και η ένταση του ρεύματος του καναλιού της Κέας.

Θεωρούμε ότι με το φωτογραφικό και ιστορικό υλικό που έχουμε συλλέξει μέχρι στιγμής, καθώς και με τις ηχοβολιστικές έρευνες του Γιώργου Παπαθεοδώρου και των συνεργατών του, αλλά πρωτίστως με την άμεση οπτική επαφή των μελών της ομάδας μας με το βυθισμένο πλοίο, πλησιάζουμε με γοργούς ρυθμούς την ταυτοποίηση του «Αγνώστου Ναυαγίου της Κέας».  Λόγω του αδιαμφισβήτητου μεγάλου μεγέθους (180 μέτρα μήκος) του ναυαγίου, η αποκάλυψη της ταυτότητας του αλλά και της ιστορίας του, είμαστε σίγουροι ότι θα προκαλέσει μεγάλη αίσθηση στην Ελλάδα αλλά και διεθνώς.

Today is the fifth day of K.D.E., the fourth of our diving operations. The calm seas and good weather continues, despite the strong currents experienced in the Kea channel, which up to now had a direction of north-east and caused us a lot of problems. While during the first few days the current flowed with a south-westerly direction, with a speed of about half a knot, today we noticed over three knots and had changed direction completely. Having prepared the first team to hit the water, suddenly the mooring rope which held the diving boat in position was cut loose; as a result that left the team only with the alternative buoy fastened to the diving down line.  Since this alternative rope line size is only eight millimeters and rattled as tautly chord in the strong current, we decided not to dive at the stern of the wreck, postponing the important task to identify the shipwreck by yet another day hoping for better weather conditions. Having reviewed the options, we decided to change plan to and moor the diving boat in the other buoy fastened at the shipwreck’s bow section (which fortunately had set up the day before) and to do yet another dive there in order to continue the investigation beyond the bridge of the ship, in the part of the superstructure amidships.

The strong current «shaved» literally, not only during the dive and the surfacing procedure but also at the very bottom in the wreck area, with the only difference that there we could seek and find appropriate spots of the superstructure whch offered some protection from the strong flow of the currens. During the dive we located the huge port side red navigation light of the ship and several large bronze plates with crystals and holes for bolts around the framework, which, in our opinion, belonged to the damaged roof of the front part of the superstructure. Then moving to the point of the hull break-up from the torpedoing which separates the aft and the bow section, we reassessed once again the huge size of the ship. Calculating our bottom times we felt that with the strong currents and the size of the wreck, it would be very difficult to cover the distance of the gap and move further aft, so we decided to go back toward the bow section and to investigate it more systematically. There we discovered that in addition to the scattered shells from the anti-aircraft guns there were other sizable cases for large caliber firearms for the cannons of the bow. All images considering the location and the positioning of the fire-arms, indicate that there was a fierce defending battle mounted by the crew just before the sinking of the ship. This moment remains as a silent witness of many still unknown aspects of the history of this ocean liner which found its wet tomb in the crystal clear waters of the Aegean.

The large sized fish were again there to welcome us and to follow us with curiosity during the dive. But since most of them are by now accustomed to our presence, they showed confidence and reached close to contact distance. As in our previous dives, these magnificent creatures accompanied us up to the point of the first decompression stop, to then disappear into the endless blue domain.

Tomorrow we hope to finally dive at the stern of the ship to find out about the existence or not, of the third shaft and propeller. But this can only be done if the weather conditions in combination with the stron g currents of the Kea channel allow.

Along with the field research we also carry out research through the Internet and via e-mails, with associates who supply us with valuable information and provide answers to our questions. We believe that with the photographic and historical background material that we have collected so far, in conjunction with the Echo-sounding survey and clear images provided by Dr. George Papatheodorou and his associates, but primarily through the direct line of sight by the members of our team of the sunken ship, we are rapidly approaching toward the identification of the «Unknown Shipwreck of Kea». Given her sheer large size large (180 meters long), the disclosure of her identity, together with her history, we are confident that this discovery will cause a great sensation both in Greece and internationally.

Ξεκινήσαμε από το λιμάνι της Κορησσίας με συννεφιά και με έναν ελαφρύ Γραίγο να έρχεται από το Κάβο Ντόρο. Αν και είχαμε προγραμματίσει να καταδυθεί μια από τις ομάδες μας στην πρύμνη για να διαπιστώσει αν υπάρχει και τρίτη προπέλα, αναγκαστήκαμε να αλλάξουμε το πρόγραμμα για να στήσουμε ένα ακόμη ρεμέτζο στο πρωραίο τμήμα του πλοίου. Ο λόγος γι΄ αυτή την ενέργεια ήταν η μεγάλη απόσταση που υπάρχει ανάμεσα στην πρύμνη και την πλώρη, γεγονός που περιορίζει την περιοχή δράσης των δυτών μια και είναι δύσκολο να καλύψει κανείς αυτή την απόσταση κατά την διάρκεια μιας βουτιάς και ιδίως με τα δυνατά ρεύματα που επικρατούν στην περιοχή.

Αυτός ο φεγγίτης που να οδηγεί άραγε; Είμαστε κοντά στη λύση του ονόματος και της ιστορίας αυτού του μοναδικού σε ομορφιά παρθένου ναυαγίου; Where would this skylight lead to? Are we close to solving the riddle of this virgin shipwreck's name?

Η πρώτη ομάδα, η οποία αφού αποπεράτωσε την εργασία πρόσδεσης του νέου ρεμετζου, κινήθηκε αποκλειστικά στην περιοχή της πλώρης με σκοπό να τραβήξει φωτογραφίες, να ερευνήσει την περιοχή και να συλλέξει πληροφορίες ούτως ώστε η δεύτερη ομάδα να ερευνήσει πιο επισταμένα ένα κομμάτι από το ναυάγιο που δεν γνωρίζαμε.

Για την πραγματοποίηση του πλάνου έρευνας χρησιμοποιήσαμε την εκπληκτική απεικόνιση του ναυαγίου που μας παραχώρησε το Πανεπιστήμιο Πατρών, τμήμα Θαλάσσιας Γεωλογίας και Ωκεανογραφίας. Πέρα από τα κανόνια που είχαμε δει την προηγούμενη ημέρα συναντήσαμε και ένα μεγάλο αντιαεροπορικό πυροβόλο, ακριβώς πριν το κοράκι της πλώρης, το οποίο βρίσκεται ακόμα στραμμένο προς τον ουρανό ενώ γύρω του υπάρχουν διάσπαρτοι κάλυκες οβίδων.

Καθ΄ όλη την διάρκεια της κατάδυσης μας συνόδευε ένα μεγάλο κοπάδι από Μαγιάτικα, της τάξεως των 15 κιλών, τα οποία μας ακολούθησαν κάνοντας κύκλους γύρω μας σε απόσταση επαφής, μέχρι την πρώτη και την δεύτερη στάση αποσυμπίεσης στα 42 και 39 μέτρα. Κάθε ημέρα που περνά διαπιστώνουμε ότι είναι ανθρώπινα αδύνατο μέσα σε τόσο μικρό χρονικό διάστημα να πραγματοποιηθεί μια εμπεριστατωμένη καταδυτική έρευνα κατά την διάρκεια μιας και μόνο αποστολής.

Το αντικείμενο που ερευνούμε είναι τόσο μεγάλο που μόνο ένα μικρό του κομμάτι μπορεί να ερευνηθεί μέσα στις δέκα ημέρες που διαρκεί το K.D.E. Ήδη αρχίσαμε να συζητάμε για μια μέλλουσα επανάληψη της αποστολής μας για να καλύψει τα κενά που σίγουρα θα παραμείνουν. Στην προσπάθεια μας αυτή μας συμπαραστέκεται και μας στηρίζει ο Δήμαρχος Κέας κ. Νίκος Δεμένεγας και σύσσωμο το Δημοτικό Συμβούλιο.

Αύριο πρόκειται να καταδυθεί η πρώτη από τις ομάδες μας στην περιοχή του πηδαλίου για να ερευνήσει αν υπάρχει και τρίτη προπέλα, ενώ η δεύτερη ομάδα θα καταδυθεί στο πρωραίο κομμάτι για να συνεχίσει την έρευνα στην περιοχή της υπερκατασκευής, προσπαθώντας να πραγματοποιήσει μια σύντομη διείσδυση στο εσωτερικό του πλοίου.

Today marks the fourth day of the K.D.E. and the weather remains good.
We started from the port of Korissia on a cloudy morning with a light north wind coming from Kavo Doro. Although we had planned for our first team to dive the stern area so as to verify the third propeller argument, we had to change the program in order to set up another mooring line fastened now at the forward section of the ship. The reason for this action involves the great distance that exists between the stern and the bow, which limits the range of action of our divers as it is quite difficult to cover this long distance during a deep dive with strict bottom time constraints.

The first group, after having completed the chain fastening task, operated exclusively in the bow section of the shipwreck aiming to shoot many photographs, to further investigate this area and to gather various pieces of information so that the second group would be even better enabled to investigate a piece of the wreck that we did not know much about.  This plan was greatly assisted from the research data gathered the previous day as the echogram featuring an amazingly clear display of the wreck, was generously offered to K.D.E. by the University of Patras, part of Marine Geology and Oceanography. Many thanks to Dr. George Papatheodorou, Assistant Professor, Maria Geraga, lecturer, and to the graduate students Margaret Iatrou, Dimitris Christodoulou,and Elias Fakiri for their extraordinary work and for the cooperation and support offered to the investigations of K.D.E.

The second group of our divers surveyed the superstructure which is scattered with a good number of objects from the wreck; most are covered with a hard crust of marine organisms. In addition to the canons we had seen during the previous day, we encountered a large anti-aircraft machine gun, just before the crow’s bow, which is still aiming toward the sky and a good number of munition large caliber shells are scattered all around this area.

During most of the duration of our dive we were closely accompanied by a large flock of large sized Magiatika fish, each of about 15 kilos, which followed us during our ascent, making circles around us at a close distance of almost contact, until our first and second decompression stops at 42 and 39 meters.

Ένα παρθένο ναυάγιο είναι ο χώρος που βρίσκονται πολλά ψάρια, μικρά και μεγάλα. Θα θέλαμε να διατηρηθεί ως έχει. A virgin shipwreck is the home of many fish large and small: we need to keep it this way!

Every day that passes we understand that is  humanly impossible in such a short period of time to carry out a thorough exploratory dive suite during a single mission. The sheer size of the shipwreck is so great that only a small piece can be covered within the ten days duration of the K.D.E.  We have already started to talk about a future repetition of our mission so as to cover all the gaps which will certainly remain. In  these efforts the Mayor of Kea, Mr. Nikos Demenegas plus the Municipal Board are quite supportive.

Finally for tomorrow, our first dive group  will dive at the stern section to investigate whether there is a third propeller or not. The second group will dive again in the forward area of this large size shipwreck and then to continue the search in the area of the superstructure, trying to make a quick penetration inside the accommodation area.

Σήμερα, όπως είχε ανακοινωθεί, καταδύθηκαν δυο ομάδες,  η πρώτη στην πρύμνη του ναυαγίου και η δεύτερη στην πλώρη. Το πλάνο της πρώτης ομάδας ήταν να επισκεφθεί την περιοχή της πρύμνης, να ερευνήσει τα διάφορα επίπεδα, να επιθεωρήσει το τιμόνι και τις προπέλες και να αποτυπώσει όλα τα ενδιαφέροντα μέρη του πλοίου. Η κατάδυση πραγματοποιήθηκε με μέγιστο βάθος 65 μέτρα, χρόνο βυθού 30 λεπτά και συνολικό χρόνο κατάδυσης 110 λεπτά. Χρησιμοποιήθηκαν, όπως και χθες, Trimix 18/45, σαν Bottom Gas, και Nitrox 50 και καθαρό οξυγόνο, σαν αέρια αποσυμπίεσης.

Στην αρχή η ομάδα επισκέφθηκε το κατάστρωμα της πρύμνης, όπου διαπίστωσε ότι στην δεξιά και την αριστερή πλευρά υπάρχουν δυο μεγάλα κανόνια και ότι σε όλο τον χώρο βρίσκονται κιβώτια πυρομαχικών τα οποία περιέχουν οβίδες. Όταν η ομάδα έφτασε κοντά στις προπέλες, οι οποίες βρίσκονται στο βάθος των 72 μέτρων, διαπίστωσε ότι το πλοίο έχει δυο εξωτερικούς άξονες που φέρουν τρίφτερες προπέλες. Η δεξιά βρίσκεται καλυμμένη από το κύτος και από την αριστερή λείπει ένα φτερό. Αυτό όμως που μας έκανε εντύπωση είναι μια κατασκευαστική λεπτομέρεια του κύτους. Πρόκειται για μια μεγάλη ογκώδη στρογγυλή προεξοχή η οποία βρίσκεται ανάμεσα στις δυο προαναφερόμενες προπέλες. Εικάζουμε ότι κάτω από την εξοχή αυτή βρίσκεται και τρίτη προπέλα την οποία μπορεί να δει κανείς μόνο όταν φτάσει στον βυθό.

Έτσι μια ομάδα θα επισκεφθεί αύριο το ίδιο σημείο και θα καταδυθεί στα 72 μέτρα για να επιβεβαιώσει την ορθότητα της εικασίας μας. Αν αυτό επιβεβαιωθεί, τότε αλλάζουν όλα τα μέχρι τώρα δεδομένα και ανοίγει ένα καινούργιο κεφάλαιο για το «Άγνωστο Ναυάγιο της Κέας». Σ΄ αυτό συνηγορούν και τα αποτελέσματα των ερευνών της δεύτερης ομάδας στην περιοχή της πλώρης καθώς και οι έρευνες του Γιώργου Παπαθεδώρου.

Η δεύτερη ομάδα κινήθηκε προς την πλώρη για να διαπιστώσει κατά την διάρκεια της διαδρομής ότι το πλοίο είναι κομμένο στα δύο, με ένα άνοιγμα 10 περίπου μέτρων ανάμεσα στα δυο κομμάτια. Το πρυμναίο κομμάτι έχει μια κλίση προς τα δεξιά, ενώ το πρωραίο βρίσκεται οριζόντια στον βυθό. Όταν η ομάδα μας προχώρησε στο πρωραίο κομμάτι, διαπίστωσε ότι πρόκειται για ένα τεράστιο πλοίο του οποίου η υπερκατασκευή αποτελείται από πολλά επίπεδα καθώς και το μέγεθος του τμήματος αυτού υπερβαίνει κατά πολύ το πρυμναίο τμήμα. Έτσι αθροισμένα τα δυο τμήματα, σύμφωνα με τους πρόχειρους υπολογισμούς μας, δίνουν σαν αποτέλεσμα ένα μήκος το οποίο ξεπερνά κατά πολύ όχι μόνο το Città di Tripoli, αλλά και το Theophile Gautier. Στην πλώρη βρίσκονται επίσης δυο μεγάλα κανόνια και πάρα πολλά αντικείμενα και εξαρτήματα του πλοίου.

Ο Γιώργος Παπαθεοδώρου μας παρέδωσε σήμερα το βράδυ καινούργιες απεικονίσεις του ναυαγίου, υψηλής ευκρίνειας, καθώς και περαιτέρω ακριβή στοιχεία των ερευνών του. Η απεικόνιση του ναυαγίου και τα νέα στοιχεία που προέκυψαν, μας πληροφορούν ότι πρόκειται για ένα πλοίο μήκους 182 περίπου μέτρων, κομμένο στην μέση, με περισσότερα από ένα φουγάρο, έχοντας τον άξονα πρύμνη πλώρη στραμμένο προς τα βορειοανατολικά. Πέρα από αυτό μας πληροφόρησε για την ύπαρξη ενός αεροπλάνου σε 400 μέτρα απόσταση από το ναυάγιο. Το αεροπλάνο, του οποίου παραθέτουμε απεικόνιση από τον πλευρικό σαρωτή, έχει άνοιγμα πτερυγίων γύρω στα 26 μέτρα και μήκος ατράκτου τα 20 μέτρα, είναι ακέραιο και διακρίνονται οι έλικες του. Αν ο καιρός μας το επιτρέψει, πρόκειται να το καταδυθούμε τις επόμενες ημέρες, αυτό όμως που προέχει είναι η περαιτέρω έρευνα του «Αγνώστου Ναυαγίου της Κέας», το οποίο αποτελεί πια για μας το μοναδικό θέμα συζήτησης και καθημερινού ενδιαφέροντος.

It seems that the island of Kea decided to offer to us three major prizes in one single day. The first is the good weather and calm seas, which will facilitate our operations; the second concerns our diving in conjunction with the new evidence discovered in the wreck and the third is about the incredible results of the echograms done by George Papatheodorou and his team who offered to us depictions of the wreck taken from the side scan sonar, rendered with photograph like resolution!

Today, as previously announced, the K.D.E. team split in two diving groups, the first visiting the stern of the wreck and the second heading toward the separate bow section. The plan of the first group was to survey the region of the stern, to investigate its various levels, to inspect the rudder and propellers and to photograph all the interesting parts of the ship.

The dive reached a maximum depth of 65 meters, with bottom time of 30 minutes and total dive time of 110 minutes. As the day before, Trimix 18/45,was used as Bottom Gas and Nitrox 50 and pure oxygen, for decompression.

Initially the group surveyed the aft deck, noticing that on both sides there are two large cannons and near them ammunition boxes containing large caliber shells. When the group reached the propellers at a depth of 72 m, discovered that the ship has two protruding shafts with three bladed propellers at their ends. The starboard side one is covered by the hull while from the port side one blade is cut off.  But what impressed us more was a structural detail of the hull. It involves a big bulky round projection, which is between the two aforementioned propellers. We can assume that under this protrusion is the third propeller which can only be seen by reaching the bottom.

Therefore, one group will visit this particular section tomorrow and will dive at a depths of 72 meters in order to confirm the third propeller argument. If such is verified, then all of our theories about the possible identity of the «Unknown Shipwreck of Kea» enter into a new chapter.  Toward this change of course point the results of the survey carried out by our second divers group in the bow and by the investigations of Dr. George Papathedorou and his team.

The second divers group went to the distant bow section using scooters in order to verify that the large ship is indeed cut into two sections with a gap of about 10 meters.The aft section has a distinct list to the right, while the bow section sits upright on the sandy.

When our group surveyed the fore part, it noted that this is a huge ship whose superstructure consists of several levels and the size of the fore section exceeds that of the aft section. Thus by adding the two sections, according to our rough calculations,the length obtained exceeds well that of Città di Tripoli, but also the length of Theophile Gautier. In the bow section there are also two large cannons and too many scattered objects and parts of the ship.

Dr. George Papatheodorou has delivered this evening new echo images of the wreck, of high definition and precise details for further investigations. From the outline of the wreck and all the new evidence emerged, we are now told that this is a boat with a length of 182 m, cut in two pieces,  with more than one smokestack, having its stern to bow axis pointing toward the northeast.

Aside from all this precise data, he informed us of the existence of an intact airplane laying at 400 meters ahead of the shipwreck. The aircraft, rendered accidentally from the side scan sonar,has a wind span of  around 26 meters and a fuselage length of 20 meters. The fuselage is intact and its twin engines are distinguishable.

Should the prevailing weather conditions allow, we intend to also dive this bonus find in  the next few days.

Nevertheless, what is of utmost importance is to continue further our investigation for identifying the «Unknown Shipwreck of Kea», which is now for us the only topic of discussion and interest every day!

Ήταν μια συγκλονιστική εμπειρία καθώς το ναυάγιο βρίσκεται σε πολύ καλή κατάσταση και η ορατότητα, η οποία έφτανε τα 15 μέτρα, άφηνε να φανεί ο όγκος του πλοίου ήδη από τα 45 μέτρα βάθος. Το γεγονός ότι το ναυάγιο δεν έχει λεηλατηθεί, το ότι διάφορα αντικείμενα παραμένουν ακόμη στην θέση τους, και το ότι ελάχιστοι κάτοικοι της Τζιάς γνωρίζουν για την ύπαρξη του, οδηγεί στο συμπέρασμα ότι η ομάδα μας είναι η πρώτη που το καταδύθηκε.

Έγιναν δυο καταδύσεις από τις οποίες η πρώτη πραγματοποιήθηκε από μια ομάδα τριών ατόμων, ενώ η δεύτερη από μια ομάδα τεσσάρων ατόμων.

Τα αέρια που χρησιμοποιήθηκαν ήταν Trimix 18/45 σαν Bottom Gas, ενώ για την αποσυμπίεση χρησιμοποιήθηκαν Nitrox 50 και καθαρό οξυγόνο. Το μέγιστο βάθος ήταν 65 μέτρα, η παραμονή στο ναυάγιο 20 λεπτά, και ο συνολικός χρόνος κατάδυσης 70 λεπτά. Τραβήχτηκαν αρκετές φωτογραφίες και 17 λεπτά βίντεο, τα οποία αποτελούν προς στιγμήν το πρώτο υλικό που συλλέξαμε και ευελπιστούμε να βοηθήσει στην ταυτοποίηση του ναυαγίου. Το πλοίο είναι μεγάλο και θα χρειαστούν πολλές καταδύσεις ακόμα μέχρι να καταλήξουμε σε κάποια συμπεράσματα όσον αφορά την ταυτότητα του.

Η ομάδα του K.D.E. συνοδεύεται από επιτηρητή της Εφορείας Εναλίων Αρχαιοτήτων ο οποίος παραμένει κατά την διάρκεια των καταδύσεων στην πλατφόρμα της αποστολής, το καΐκι ΜΠΕΝΙΤΟΣ.

Εκτός των σημερινών υπέροχων καταδύσεων είχαμε και ορισμένες ατυχίες που συνοδεύουν τέτοιες αποστολές. Μια φωτογραφική μηχανή δεν λειτούργησε κατά την διάρκεια της κατάδυσης, μια βίντεο κάμερα δεν λειτούργησε επίσης, ένας προβολέας βίντεο έσπασε από την βάση του και χάθηκε μια φιάλη οξυγόνου πλάγιας αγκίστρωσης με τον ρυθμιστή της. Το πιο σημαντικό όμως είναι ότι ένα μέλος της αποστολής είχε ενοχλήσεις και δυσκολία με την εξίσωση, με αποτέλεσμα να μην μπορεί να καταδυθεί για τις επόμενες ημέρες, έτσι τα μέλη του KDE που θα πραγματοποιήσουν τις αυριανές καταδύσεις περιορίστηκαν στα έξι.

Σήμερα το απόγευμα κατέφθασε από την Πάτρα ο επίκουρος καθηγητής Γιώργος Παπαθεοδώρου με τέσσερις φοιτητές του. Αύριο το πρωί πρόκειται να διεξαχθούν πλόες καταγραφής του ναυαγίου και του βυθού γύρω από αυτό με side scan sonar και στην συνέχεια οι δυο ομάδες των δυτών της αποστολής μας θα πραγματοποιήσουν δυο καταδύσεις για την περαιτέρω έρευνα του.

Ο χώρος που επισκεφθήκαμε σήμερα περιορίστηκε στην περιοχή του μεσοκάραβου, σκοπός μας είναι αύριο η μια ομάδα δυτών να κινηθεί προς την περιοχή της πλώρης και η άλλη προς την περιοχή της πρύμνης. Η πρώτη ομάδα θα προσπαθήσει επίσης να κάνει μια σύντομη αναγνωριστική διείσδυση στον χώρο της υπερκατασκευής, στην περιοχή του δευτέρου επιπέδου. Ελπίζουμε ότι τα στοιχεία που θα συλλέξουμε στους χώρους αυτούς θα βοηθήσουν στην περαιτέρω έρευνα έτσι ώστε να δημιουργηθεί μια πιο πλήρη εικόνα για την ταυτότητα και την κατάσταση του ναυαγίου.

This morning the cool temperature improved as did the strong wind of the previous day, allowing the team to dive for the first time the «Unknown Shipwreck of Kea». It was a fascinating experience as the wreck is in very good condition, together with a clear visibility, reaching 15 meters, allowed to distinguish the ship’s outline from as early as 45 meters depth. The fact that the wreck seems to be unspoiled, all its fittings still in place and that very few residents of Kea are aware of her existence, leads to the conclusion that our team is the first one to dive this wonderful shipwreck.

Today two separate dives were carried out, one with a team of three K.D.E. members and the second by a team of four paired in two’s.

The gases used were Trimix 18/45 as Bottom Gas, while for decompression Nitrox 50 and pure oxygen was used. The maximum depth was 65 meters, with a bottom time of 20 minutes used for exploring the wreck; the total dive time was 70 minutes. Several photos were taken plus 17 minutes of video, which are for the moment the first material collected while we hope that these will ssist us for  identifying the shipwreck. The ship is large and will require many more dives beore coming to some concrete conclusion as to her identity.

The KDE team is accompanied by a supervisor from the  Ephorate of Marine Antiquities who remains during the diving operations aboard the diving boat BENITOS.

Apart from today’s fabulous first dive we had some bad luck which often is part of such missions. A camera did not work during the dive, as did a video camera, while a video light broke from its base and a bottle of oxygen detached from its clip and was lost to the depths together with its regulator. The most serious incident involved a member of the diving team who experienced difficulty with equalizing eustachians resulting to his inability to dive for the next few days, hence, the diving members of the K.D.E. team are now reduced to six.

This afternoon also arrived from Patras the Assistant Professor George Papatheodorou with four of his assisting students. Tomorrow morning echo sound recordings of the wreck and the seabed around it using side scan sonar are planned. Following this, the two teams of now three divers each will continue our mission by making two dives in an effort to deepen our survey.

Όλα τα μέλη της αποστολής συναντηθήκαμε χθες το μεσημέρι στο λιμάνι της Κέας, κάτω από δυσμενείς καιρικές συνθήκες, με κυρίαρχες ανάμεσα τους τον δυνατό άνεμο και την βροχή.

Η πρώτη δραστηριότητα μας ήταν να διαρρυθμίσουμε τον χώρο που ευγενικά μας παραχωρήθηκε, από τον Γιάννη Βρονταμίτη, για να λειτουργήσει σαν σταθμός πλήρωσης φιαλών και μίξης αερίων. Στον χώρο αυτόν είχαν μεταφερθεί ήδη, με φορτηγό από την Αθήνα, 20 φιάλες των 50 λίτρων ήλιο, και 10 φιάλες οξυγόνο. Η χθεσινή ημέρα και το μεγαλύτερο μέρος της σημερινής πέρασε με γεμίσματα, προετοιμασία του εξοπλισμού, διευθέτηση εκκρεμοτήτων με τις λιμενικές αρχές και καθορισμό του πλάνου βουτιάς.

Ο δυνατός αέρας και η βροχή μειώθηκαν το απόγευμα και έτσι μας δόθηκε η δυνατότητα να μεταφέρουμε τον εξοπλισμό και τις γεμάτες φιάλες στο καΐκι μας, το “ΜΠΕΝΙΤΟΣ”, το οποίο αποτελεί την καταδυτική πλατφόρμα της αποστολής.

Εκτός από το “ΜΠΕΝΙΤΟΣ” υπάρχουν επίσης δυο ακόμα συνοδευτικά σκάφη τα RIB, “ΉΒΗ ΙΙΙ” του Βύρωνα Ρηγινού και το “ΦΑΤΣΑ” του Νίκου Καρατζά.

Σε σχέση με την κατάδυση τον πρώτο λόγο έχει ο καιρός. Έτσι περιμένουμε να πέσει ο αέρας (Β-ΒΑ, 5-6 Beaufort) ώστε να κάνουμε την πρώτη αναγνωριστική μας κατάδυση στο ναυάγιο αύριο Δευτέρα 22/9/08.

The day we awaited for so long has finally arrived! The Kea Dive Expedition has commenced and we all hope that it will evolve smoothly and as planned.

All members of the expedition met yesterday afternoon in the port of Kea, under adverse weather conditions, a mix of wind and rain.

The first activity was to arrange the space which was graciously offered to the team by John Vrontamitis, serving as a filling station for the bottles and for mixing gases. To this floor space had already been delivered by truck from Athens, 20 bottles of 50 liters of helium plus another 20 oxygen bottles of same size. Yesterday and most of today were dedicated to bottle filling, preparation of equipment, settling outstanding issues with the local Port Police authority, and reviewing the dive plan.

The strong wind and rain eased off in the afternoon, so we had the opportunity to transfer equipment and the filled bottles to our boat, “BENITOS”, which serves as the diving platform of the mission. Apart from the” BENITOS” yet there are also two RIB support vessels, Byron Riginos’ ”IVI III” and Nikos Karatzas’ “FATSA”.

As regards the dive, the ruling factor is the weather. Anticipating that the winds will subside from the current (N-NE, 5-6 Beaufort) allowing us to make our first exploratory dive to the shipwreck tomorrow, Monday 22nd September 2008.
